When Instagram was a newly launched app, Malcom Johnny – the face behind Graato – bought himself a trusty iPod to take pictures. Who knew that a small hobby could develop into such a huge passion for the art? Malcom now shoots with a mirrorless camera, making sure that his Instagram page is filled with the beauty of life in his homeland, Borneo. His little project #capturingsabah allows viewers to see a side of Sabah that they have never seen before, through the lens of a local.

Malcom was born and raised in the small town of Tamparuli in Sabah, growing up as the second child in a family of four children. This coffee-loving photographer enjoys jamming with friends, and playing snooker during his leisure. Never leaving home without his camera, Malcom envisions his pictures by taking inspiration from the rich culture surrounding him, and also the stories and way of life of his subjects. His photography is raw, real and relatable – sometimes featuring his daily essentials and lifestyle. Who doesn’t love some dreamy cafe shots?

Currently, Malcom is working as a waiter in a hotel but that doesn’t stop him from hoping that photography will someday turn out to be a full-time career. Until then, Malcom will continue to cafe hop and take beautiful pictures around his motherland for us to enjoy.
