07 Oct The “It Girl” Ira Roslan
Known to many as Ira, Nadira Roslan, is one spunky, cool and trendy individual. Growing up, Ira was always encouraged by her mum to work in the Public Relations (PR) line, and shared with us that “naturally, [she] attempted to go against [her] mum’s wishes but here [she is] now.” Ira laughs as she muses that “mums always know best.” A lot has changed since then as Ira is now a full-time PR girl by day and fierce DJ by night.
During her time in university, Ira studied Professional Communications in Australia, majoring in film and public relations. After coming back to Malaysia, she was given the option to work in the fashion and modelling industry, or film. While both options presented Ira with great opportunities, she tells us that ultimately, “[she] decided to go with fashion PR” and has not looked back since. Ira shares with us that being in the PR line is “a good way to observe how people interact and [she] has always been interested in relationships”. As a result, Ira has met many people and developed friendships that last throughout her career.
As for her DJ-ing background, Ira found her hidden talent by chance. Ira tells us that she learnt to DJ from a friend who was also picking it up. After learning some basics, Ira practised regularly with her good friend DJ Nadia – who makes up one hand of Twinkles KL. When we asked Ira about her first gig, she tells us that “it was for Livescape’s New Years Eve mini party at Petaling Street, and as nerve-wrecking as it was, [she] stuck to it”. The support and encouragement she received from her friends and family made her decide to pursue her second passion. The amazing crowd she spins for also make the job worthwhile, or so she says.
The Ink team managed to catch Ira for a short interview and photoshoot session at Skullduggery in Plaza Damansara, where she is currently a resident DJ. With her “wet hair” look inspired by Kim Kardashian at the MTV Awards this year, Ira was edgy and chic, bringing life to our wardrobe choices from FABSPY. A natural behind the lens, Ira looked as hot as ever, and we are not complaining. Check out her looks!

What are the main challenges that you face in the PR industry?
In my experience, it’s being able to accept that we work in an industry where some things are beyond our control. We try to do the best we can but there will inevitably be moments where we don’t get the results we had worked for — and that’s okay. Just keep things positive and look at taking a different approach next time. there’s always room to grow.
What do you usually start with when preparing for a set?
I decide which tracks I want to play for the night, sometimes going through blogs and music platforms to search for new songs. I’ll compile those and roughly figure out a flow, but during the gig it really depends on how people are responding. It’s literally play-by-ear. Haha!
What is the deciding factor for you to play a particular record during one of your sets? It there a criteria when selecting what to play at a gig?
Generally I play house music or nu disco. The latter being my favourite, but of course it doesn’t necessarily fit all the time. I’ll decide based on the vibe of the room and the track.
Any advice for those who aspire to do what you do?
Don’t second guess yourself. I struggled with that for a while. Sometimes it’s better to just leap and do it!
Favourite hangout for the weekend?
I’ve been hanging at Skullduggery in Damansara Heights a LOT! Haha!
What is your opinion on the street fashion trend in Malaysia?
I’ve enjoyed watching people get adventurous with styling, and am looking forward to seeing how designers push the boundaries of street.
If you could raid one woman’s closet, whose would it be?
At the moment it wouldn’t be a woman but Gucci’s Alessandro Michele!
If you could only wear one item of clothing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
What do you want to say to yourself in 10 years and how do you want to be remembered now?
I’m not sure; I haven’t thought what I’d be like 10 years, but I’d say to myself in 2016 that everything that is happening is meant to happen the way it is right now.
